The collection consists of the original signed manuscript of the permanent constitution of the Confederate States of America, adopted on March 11, 1861. The document consists of five vellum sheets pasted together and rolled, signed by Howell Cobb, President of the Congress and delegates from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas. The collections also includes correspondence related to the ownership of the constitution and three photographs.

The collection consists of correspondence of the Champion family from 1816-1869. The bulk of the collection contains letters written by Aaron Champion of Savannah (Georgia) or Moses Champion of Monticello (Georgia) to Dr. Reuben Champion, Jr. of West Springfield (Massachusetts). The Champions comment on the social, political, and economic situations occurring in Georgia during. The collection also contains an 1816 letter from H. Stebbins of Savannah to Dr. Reuben Champion, Jr. pertaining to Savannah, the people, commerce, and slavery; three letters from Henry Champion of Montgomery (Alabama) to Dr. Champion discussing the proposed statehood of what was then the western territory; and a series of letters written from Savannah during the Civil War discussing the formation of the Confederacy, the progress of the war, and its effect upon the civilian population.

The collection consists of papers of Joseph E. Brown from 1823-1895 and includes correspondence, letter books, tax returns, speeches, and diaries. It contains official correspondence and letterbooks (1858-1863) as Governor of Georgia which are particularly strong in information regarding Georgia's secession and involvement in the Civil War and includes such correspondents as Howell Cobb, Alexander H. Stephens, and other Confederate government officials. Also included are an 1864 speech of Howell Cobb, a speech (1868) made by Brown regarding Reconstruction politics, and a manuscript copy (1864) of Brown's pamphlet concerning Benjamin H. Hill's notes on Reconstruction. The collection also contains diaries of Franklin P. Brown (1868), Joseph Mackey Brown (1867, 1874, 1876), and Elijah A. Brown (1882, Jan. only).

Series 1. Historical Manuscripts consists of manuscripts relating to Georgia history collected by Telamon Cuyler covering the period 1754-1905. The series includes correspondence; bonds; county records, particularly for Jones County (Ga.); court records; indentures; inventories; land grants; newspaper clippings; and official Georgia government records for the office of the Adjutant General, Comptroller General, Governor, and Treasurer from 1754-1905 (with gaps). Topics documented within the collection include the Georgia militia; the Revolutionary War; Indian affairs in Georgia during the 1830s (particularly treaties); shipping (1770s-1780s); and boundary disputes between Georgia and Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The series also contains administrative records and correspondence pertaining to the activities of the Confederate government and the Georgia military troops during the Civil War. These records include materials of Ira R. Foster (Georgia Quartermaster General), H. H. Waters (Executive Secretary, Dept. of Georgia), Henry C. Wayne (Georgia Adjutant General), and Jared I. Whitaker (Georgia Commissary General).
